Top 5 Paint Gun Mistakes — and How to Avoid Them in the Workshop
Many painting defects are not caused by product quality, but by surface preparation, equipment adjustment, and application technique. For a workshop, these mistakes mean wasted material, lost time redoing the work, and sometimes, dissatisfied customers. Here are the five most common errors in spray painting and how they can be prevented. 1. Insufficient surface preparation Applying paint to an insufficiently cleaned, degreased, or sanded surface is one of the main causes of adhesion problems. Residues of silicone, grease, dust, or rust can cause paint flaking, blistering, or cratering. The surface must be properly cleaned, degreased, and sanded before product application. Dust resulting from sanding must be completely removed, and exposed metal areas must be treated with the recommended products for the painting system used. 2. Incorrect gun adjustment Air pressure, material flow, and spray pattern directly influence application quality. Too much pressure can cause excessive overspray and material loss, while too little pressure can lead to improper atomization and an uneven finish. The gun must be adjusted according to the product, the nozzle used, and the manufacturer's recommendations. Before painting the part, it is advisable to perform a spray test to check the spray pattern and the amount of material applied. 3. Improper application distance or movement Holding the gun too close to the surface promotes excessive material buildup and runs. If the gun is held too far away, the product may reach the part partially dry, resulting in a rough surface or a dry spray appearance. The gun must be held at a constant distance and perpendicular to the surface. Movements must be uniform, and successive passes should overlap in the recommended proportion for the product being applied. The travel speed must be kept constant across the entire surface. 4. Incorrect product mixing or preparation Failure to observe the proportions between paint, hardener, and thinner can alter the viscosity, drying time, and resistance of the final coat. Also, using an insufficiently homogenized or unfiltered product can cause shade differences, impurities, and finishing defects. The components must be measured according to the technical data sheet, then mixed and filtered before being put into the gun. Both the induction time, if provided, and the pot life of the mixture after preparation must be observed. 5. Applying too thick coats or not respecting flash-off times Applying too much material in a single pass increases the risk of runs, boiling, wrinkling, and uneven drying. Failure to observe flash-off times between coats can trap solvents in the film and affect the appearance and durability of the finish. It is recommended to apply several controlled coats, observing the flash-off times indicated by the manufacturer. Temperature, humidity, and ventilation in the work area should also be checked and maintained within recommended limits. Conclusion: how to reduce these errors at the workshop level Most problems can be prevented through a well-established work process: using a checklist for cleaning, degreasing, and sanding; selecting the nozzle and adjusting the pressure according to the product; checking the spray pattern before application; observing mixing proportions and filtering the product; maintaining a constant application distance and speed; observing the number of coats and flash-off times; checking the complete painting system: primer, basecoat, clearcoat, hardener, and thinner. Following these steps reduces unnecessary material consumption, limits rework, and contributes to obtaining a uniform and durable finish.

How to protect car paint
For a workshop, paint protection is not just advice for customers, but also an opportunity: maintenance and protection products (polish, wax, ceramic coating) are additional services that naturally complement a repair or painting job. Here are the main recommendations you can offer customers — and what's worth having in stock to support them. 1. Correct Washing Incorrect washing (dirty sponges, aggressive circular motions, excessive concentrated pressure) creates micro-scratches that become visible over time, especially on dark colors. The basic recommendation for customers: wash with clean materials, correct technique (top to bottom, linear movements), and avoid car washes with worn or abrasive brushes. 2. Avoiding Aggressive Detergents Cleaning products not designed for car bodies, such as all-purpose detergents or those with aggressive chemical formulas, can attack existing wax or protection and, over time, can affect the gloss of the clear coat. Recommend dedicated car body products with a neutral pH to customers — an area where the workshop can offer and directly sell suitable products. 3. Polishing Only When Necessary Polishing removes a microscopic layer of clear coat to eliminate fine scratches and oxidation — useful, but not a routine treatment. Applied too often or aggressively, it unnecessarily thins the clear coat over time. The correct recommendation for the customer: polish when there are visible defects, not as a regular procedure at every visit. 4. Ceramic Coating or Wax Both provide an additional protective layer over the clear coat, reducing the impact of dirt, UV, and micro-scratches: wax — more accessible protection, but with shorter durability, requiring periodic reapplication; ceramic coating — much greater durability, superior resistance to fine scratches and chemical agents, but with higher cost and more demanding application. These additional services can be offered after a painting or touch-up job, using products compatible with the applied paint system. 5. Prompt Scratch Repair A scratch left untreated exposes the metal to corrosion and can rapidly worsen, especially in winter (salt, humidity). Recommending to customers to treat scratches quickly — even with a minor touch-up — prevents much more costly repairs later and generates recurring small touch-up jobs for the workshop. 6. Using Products Compatible with the Paint System Not all protection products are suitable for all types of clear coats. Recommending and selling incompatible products (e.g., too chemically aggressive for a matte clear coat) can affect the obtained finish. Choosing maintenance products from the same range or compatible with the painting system used reduces the risk of these problems and offers the customer a coherent package — painting plus recommended maintenance. Conclusion Paint protection is a topic that the workshop can turn into added value: correct advice for customers, plus a range of maintenance products (car shampoos, polish, wax, ceramic coating) available directly at the end of a repair or painting job. It is both a service that increases customer satisfaction and an additional source of sales for the workshop.

Surface Preparation Guide for Painting — What You Should Always Have in Stock
The best paint in the world yields poor results on an improperly prepared surface — flaking, blistering, poor adhesion, or uneven appearance. For a workshop or industrial applicator, surface preparation is not just a process step, but also a list of products that must be consistently in stock. Here are the steps, in order, and what you should order for each. 1. Cleaning The first step is to remove dust, coarse dirt, and visible residues from the surface. It seems trivial, but any particle left under the paint becomes a visible defect or a starting point for detachment. 2. Degreasing Oils, greases, and silicone residues (common on car bodies or lubricated industrial parts) prevent paint adhesion even if the surface appears visually clean. Degreasing with a dedicated product, applied correctly (not just sprayed and wiped superficially), is a step that many adhesion complaints originate from when it is skipped or done superficially. 3. Sanding Sanding creates the necessary roughness for the mechanical anchoring of the primer or paint. The grit used differs depending on the stage (defect removal vs. fine preparation before painting) and the type of surface — metal, putty, old paint. 4. Rust Removal On metal surfaces, rust must be completely removed before primer application — mechanically (sanding, sandblasting) or chemically (rust converter), depending on the degree of corrosion and the type of part. Painting over untreated rust carries the risk of corrosion reappearing under the film, no matter how good the product applied on top is. 5. Primer Application The primer creates the connection between the prepared surface and the topcoat — it ensures adhesion, evens out porosity, and, in the case of anti-corrosion primers, provides additional protection. The choice of the right primer (epoxy, acrylic, with or without hardener) depends on the substrate it is applied to and the complete system used afterward. 6. Adherence to Drying Times Each stage — degreasing, primer, putty — has a drying time recommended by the manufacturer. Failure to observe these times, due to haste, can lead to subsequent problems: paint flaking, cratering, or poor adhesion between layers. Drying times are part of the product's technical data sheet; they are not optional. 7. Temperature and Humidity in the Workspace Workshop conditions directly influence the result: too low temperatures prolong drying and can affect adhesion, while high humidity can cause defects such as "blushing" (whitening of the film) in certain products. For consistent and predictable work, it's worth investing in a space or booth with as controlled a temperature and humidity as possible. Conclusion: The Basic List for a Prepared Stock To avoid stopping work halfway due to lack of product, a workshop should consistently have in stock: degreaser compatible with the type of paint used; abrasive paper/discs in multiple grits; rust converter or corrosion treatment products; primer suitable for the systems most frequently worked with (epoxy, acrylic, etc.); product technical data sheets, with drying times — handy, not just "known by heart."
