Cum estimezi corect cantitatea de vopsea înainte de a comanda

How do you accurately estimate the amount of paint before ordering?

on Jul 21, 2026

Ordering the wrong amount of paint – too little or too much – costs time and money: too little means an additional order that delays the work and may result in a batch with a slightly different shade; too much means wasted material, paid for unnecessarily. Here are the factors that influence actual consumption and how to estimate it before placing an order.

1. Consumption depends on the surface, product, number of coats, and application method

The required quantity is never just "surface area multiplied by a standard consumption" – it varies depending on the type of product (viscosity, solid content), how many coats are needed for uniform coverage, and the application method used (conventional gun, HVLP, airless). The technical data sheet for each product indicates a theoretical consumption (usually in g/sqm or ml/sqm per coat) which is the starting point for calculation.

2. For metal and industrial surfaces, calculation is per square meter

For industrial jobs (metal halls, machinery, structures, floors), the estimation starts from the total surface area to be covered (sqm), the number of coats in the system (primer + topcoat, possibly intermediate coat), and the theoretical consumption of each product. For parts with complex geometry, the actual painted surface can be significantly larger than the "visible" surface, due to edges, corners, and hard-to-reach areas.

3. Losses vary depending on the spray gun, applicator's experience, and part geometry

The theoretical consumption from the technical data sheet does not account for actual application losses – "overspray" (paint that does not reach the surface), losses during equipment cleaning, or adjustments made by a less experienced applicator. In practice, losses can range from approximately 10-15% for efficient application with high-performance equipment, to 30% or more for parts with complex geometry or less experienced applicators. These losses must be added to the theoretical calculation to avoid an insufficient order.

4. Why consultation is worthwhile before placing an order

For larger projects (halls, machinery fleets, recurring workshop orders), an incorrect estimate has a direct impact on budget and deadlines. Discussing the project with the supplier – surface, chosen product system, application method, working conditions – allows for a consumption calculation much closer to reality than an estimate made solely from the technical data sheet, without context.

Conclusion: what information to prepare before requesting a quote

For an accurate estimate, you need to be able to communicate the following to the supplier:

  • the total surface area to be painted (sqm), as accurate as possible;

  • the chosen product system (number of coats: primer, intermediate, final);

  • the application method used (conventional gun, HVLP, airless, spray);

  • the complexity of the parts (flat surfaces vs. structures with many edges and corners).

With this information, direct consultation with the supplier before ordering significantly reduces the risk of an incorrect estimate.
