Surface Preparation Guide for Painting — What You Should Always Have in Stock

The best paint in the world yields poor results on an improperly prepared surface — flaking, blistering, poor adhesion, or uneven appearance. For a workshop or industrial applicator, surface preparation is not just a process step, but also a list of products that must be consistently in stock. Here are the steps, in order, and what you should order for each.

1. Cleaning

The first step is to remove dust, coarse dirt, and visible residues from the surface. It seems trivial, but any particle left under the paint becomes a visible defect or a starting point for detachment.

2. Degreasing

Oils, greases, and silicone residues (common on car bodies or lubricated industrial parts) prevent paint adhesion even if the surface appears visually clean. Degreasing with a dedicated product, applied correctly (not just sprayed and wiped superficially), is a step that many adhesion complaints originate from when it is skipped or done superficially.

3. Sanding

Sanding creates the necessary roughness for the mechanical anchoring of the primer or paint. The grit used differs depending on the stage (defect removal vs. fine preparation before painting) and the type of surface — metal, putty, old paint.

4. Rust Removal

On metal surfaces, rust must be completely removed before primer application — mechanically (sanding, sandblasting) or chemically (rust converter), depending on the degree of corrosion and the type of part. Painting over untreated rust carries the risk of corrosion reappearing under the film, no matter how good the product applied on top is.

5. Primer Application

The primer creates the connection between the prepared surface and the topcoat — it ensures adhesion, evens out porosity, and, in the case of anti-corrosion primers, provides additional protection. The choice of the right primer (epoxy, acrylic, with or without hardener) depends on the substrate it is applied to and the complete system used afterward.

6. Adherence to Drying Times

Each stage — degreasing, primer, putty — has a drying time recommended by the manufacturer. Failure to observe these times, due to haste, can lead to subsequent problems: paint flaking, cratering, or poor adhesion between layers. Drying times are part of the product's technical data sheet; they are not optional.

7. Temperature and Humidity in the Workspace

Workshop conditions directly influence the result: too low temperatures prolong drying and can affect adhesion, while high humidity can cause defects such as "blushing" (whitening of the film) in certain products. For consistent and predictable work, it's worth investing in a space or booth with as controlled a temperature and humidity as possible.

To avoid stopping work halfway due to lack of product, a workshop should consistently have in stock:

  • degreaser compatible with the type of paint used;

  • abrasive paper/discs in multiple grits;
